Fable is an upcoming rebooted instalment in the Fable series developed by Playground Games.[1]
After announcing a second delay in the release date on May 29th, Fable was showcased once again at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7th, 2026, with the official release date now set for February 23, 2027. [2] Following the showcase, players can now pre-order Fable in their choice of edition: standard, premium, or collector's.
Development
In early 2018, rumors existed that Fable IV was currently in development by Playground Games, with numerous Linkedin job postings published. An Xbox Live API leak confirmed that a Fable related project codenamed Wisdom was being developed by a UK based studio. Allegedly the success of the PS4 title, Horizon: Zero Dawn inspired Microsoft to produce a suitable, competing, single player RPG title.
A former Lionhead Lead Engine Programmer, Don Williamson, who worked on both Fable I and II, posted on Twitter that he’d worked out which studio was "currently working on Fable IV", stating that he believed it to be an "interesting choice". This tweet has since been deleted.
Playground Games then recruited a senior game designer for the purpose of producing an "AAA open-world RPG" which would strongly suggest they were entering the development process. This was later confirmed at E3 2018, however, "for a "brand new game."
According to developer Ralph Fulton, Playground was convinced of the need to reboot the franchise so they could tell their own story and not be bogged down by prior continuity. Playground had access to development documents from Lionhead. One of the documents described the IP as "fairytale, not fantasy," which provided a guiding star for the game's development. This was treated as one of the game's development pillars. The other was its "Britishness," in terms of humor, tone, and setting (in that Albion is based on Medieval England). Freedom of choice was the game's third pillar.[3]
Every town in the game was designed to be functional.[3]
For the game's style of humor, the development team watched British shows such as The Office, Peep Show, and The IT Crowd. In the case of The Office, its mockumentary style was used for elements of the game.[3]
The Developer Direct 2026 event announced that Fable will allow players to customise their characters, purchase homes, become landlords, evict tenants, and explore well-known locations such as Bowerstone, Bloodstone, Fairfax Castle, and the Heroes' Guild. Additionally, the developers confirmed that players will be able to get married and have children. The "sinister yet organised" Cult of Shadows will also make a return in the game.
Story
What does it mean to be a Hero? Well, in the fairytale land of Albion, that is entirely up to you. With a dark threat looming, your choices will change Albion forever.[4]
Players will start their journey as a child in the sleepy rural village of Briar Hill. It is here that they will uncover their destiny and heritage as heroes. Briar Hill is attacked while the player is still a child.[5] Following this, a time jump occurs, where the player is still at Briar Hill, but an adult, their heroic powers awakened. Everyone in the village (including the hero's grandmother) is turned to stone by a mysterious stranger. The hero goes out into the world to find a way to reverse the curse. The stranger is their only lead.[3]
Humphry, a retired hero once celebrated in Albion, takes the protagonist to what he claims is the most exclusive club in the region. He shares a story about a young woman he helped when she had nowhere to go. While he admires her bravery, he also recalls that her poor choices led him to label her as "terrifying." She returns with a plan to "fix this place," determined to proceed even if it threatens Albion's very existence. [6]
Gameplay
Fable will use open-world gameplay. Players will be able to explore Albion at will without loading screens after the tutorial. The player character's face and clothing can be customized. NPCs can be interacted with; the player can marry and can act as a landlord. Heroic quests can be obtained via the Hero's Guild. Every NPC is unique and will react to the player's wealth, past actions, style, and more.[5] 1000 NPCs will feature in the game.[3]
Like in prior games, a morality system features.[5] Unlike prior games, the player's morality will not affect their appearance. Every NPC has their own morality system, which means they will react to the hero differently.[7] For instance, if the hero kicks a chicken, they will gain the title "Chicken Chaser." However, different NPCs will interpret this act in different ways. While kicking chickens is treated as an objective ill within the game, how NPCs view the hero because of it will differ. The same paradigm explains to other actions such as thievery, bigamy, etc.[3]
Combat is carried out in third person. Returning enemies include Balverines and Hobbes.[5] The game's combat takes inspiration from the prior system of Strength, Skill, and Will, and weaves it into "style-weaving combat." Specifically, this means that players can switch from melee, to range, to magic, without any frame delay. Players are encouraged to use all three styles to take on enemies. However, players can still specialize in a combat style if they choose. Every enemy has strengths and weaknesses.[3]

Controversy/Criticism
- During the development of Playground Game's reboot of Fable, the game would find itself in a bit of controversy when people claimed in articles that the game could be going through development hell. However, Amie Spuddles did her best to squash these rumors by explaining to people how these types of struggles are all a normal part of video game development, and every team goes through these types of growing pains.
- After the 2023 trailer, gamers critiqued the female hero's looks. This also raised the question if players can choose their hero's appearance or if the main character is stationary.
- Following the release of the 2024 trailer, many critics and fans are still questioning whether the main protagonist will be customizable, and whether players will have the option to choose their gender, (similar to the choices available in Fable II and Fable III.) These aspects are significant for the game, as the Fable series has always emphasized the importance of player choice in its RPG gameplay.
- Another common complaint was how the trailer(s) "didn't look like a Fable game" and didn't show gameplay. Lead Lighting Artist, Lukas Koelz, stated, "People not believing this is 'real' or that the game will look like this is one of the best compliments."[12] The trailer also had the caption "in-game footage."
- After the 2026 Xbox Developer Direct and subsequent interviews, several concerns were raised. While previous issues, such as worries about character customisation, have been addressed, new backlash has emerged. This includes confirmation that there will be no character morphing and that there will be no dogs in the game. Additionally, there are concerns about the game being a total reboot, leading to a lack of connection to the classic titles.
- Peter Molyneux reacted negatively to the game's morality system. According to the developers, the reboot does not feature the idea of objective good or evil.[7]
